The Žilina mill’s history dates back to 1905 when it began producing cellulose for paper and synthetic fibre products. The production of sulphite alcohol began in 1941. Since 1983, the mill has been producing only hygienic paper tissue.
After the acquisition in 2006 it has been part of Finnish Metsä Tissue Corporation which has 9 tissue production units in 5 countries (1 unit in Finland, 3 in Sweden, 3 in Germany, 1 in Poland and 1 in Slovakia). Metsä Tissue is part of Metsä Group with approximately 9,300 employees and operations in 30 countries.
The mill produces toilet tissues, household towels and handkerchiefs.
Some 330 employees work in production, maintenance, logistics, product and process development, business and administration.
The mill has two paper machines, PM1 and PM2, six converting lines and one deinking line. It produces 80,000 tonnes of tissue paper per year.
Since March 2011, part of the mill’s electricity has been produced with the hydroelectric power plant at the VVB Žilina dam and currently accounts for some 70% of the mill´s total electricity consumption.
