Metsä Tissue's policy on wood and fibre sourcing

Metsä Tissue Corporation is committed to promoting
sustainable development through its business activities, to
continuously improving its operations and to conducting its business in a responsible way according to the ten principles
of The United Nations' Global Compact.

Recycled fibres
Use of fibre raw material is defined by the specific quality
requirements of each product. The objective is to use
primarily recycled fibres whenever it provides the adequate quality level for the final product. Thus over half of fibre raw material comes from recovered paper, which is sourced close
to the mills.

Virgin fibres
According to its Corporate responsibility policy Metsä Tissue is
committed to use only such primary paper pulps, which are based on sustainable managed forests, where economic, social and environmental issues are balanced. We promote reliable forest certification systems.

Based on this policy Metsä Tissue Corporation requires its pulp suppliers to verify and demonstrate following matters.

• Their wood suppliers commit to legal operations; they report the origin of the wood raw material and give information on other relevant sustainability issues upon request.
• They do not procure genetically modified wood, wood from areas converted from natural forests to plantations or wood from areas where civil or traditional rights are violated or where high conservation values are
  threatened by forest management.

Forest certification is a good tool for ensuring and communicating sustainable forest management. Metsä Tissue supports forest certification systems based on independent third-party verification and aims at continuously increasing
the share of certified wood in its raw material chain. Mills of Metsä Tissue are covered by certified chain-of-custody systems to ensure tracing of wood based raw material.

Therefore Metsä Tissue favours suppliers who source wood
from certified forests and have a certified chain-of-custody system in place.
